Central Urban Traffic Control Network, Central Control Room

In the majority of urban areas the traffic signals are connected to a central urban traffic control network control room (UTC centre). From here a purpose built computer system can provide continual monitoring and control of traffic signals throughout the Council area.

Telephone lines are used to connect junctions to the UTC network with some junctions connected wirelessly; this then allows the instant reporting of lamp failures and other on-site faults. The operator in the control room can then pass the faults out to the maintenance contractor for correction. In addition to fault reporting, control messages are sent out to the signals to force the signals into certain control strategies depending on the time of day. The timings in these control strategies are over the whole network and allow changes to offsets between neighbouring junctions to give coordination between the junctions for the main traffic flow.
